The Youth Literacy Challenge is a national competition led by the heads
of boards of education and community based organizations. The
challenge, with the support of parents, teachers, principals,
librarians, guidance counselors, and community leaders will empower
youth with the necessary tools to make informed decisions about health,
personal finance, and career topics.
The schools distribute the "Virtual Savings Card" to every parent. The card is a perpetual fund raiser that enables parent teacher associations to raise

money from local businesses instead of parents and family members. The goal of this savings card is to empower the parent to put money into the savings account of the child. This effort is truly needed because the United States has the lowest personal savings rate of any major industrialized nation, -.06, the lowest since the great depression. Another staggering statistic is that the fastest age group filing for bankruptcy is young adults (18-24).
